Winter in Minnesota : Winter Weather Records

Posted by Amy on Dec 19, 2012 8:51:00 AM

Minnesota is known for extreme weather. Freezing cold in the winter and hot and humid in the summer. And since these temperature swings don't always make for the most comfortable conditions, if we can break a weather record here or there it somehow makes enduring the crazy weather feel worth it! So this winter, take note of these weather records and let's see if we can break a few!

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) the average winter temperature in Northern Minnesota is 6 degrees Fahrenheit and 16 degrees Fahrenheit in Southern Minnesota.

The earliest recorded snowfall in Minnesota happened on August 31, 1949 in Duluth. It was only a trace of snowfall, but that still counts! The earliest measurable snowfall happened in International Falls on September 14, 1964.

On January 7, 1994, Lake County received the most snow in 24 hours - a total of 36 inches (91 cm)!

The coldest winter temperature on record is a chilly -60 degrees Fahrenheit near Tower on February 2, 1996. We hope everyone's furnace was working that day!

Enjoy a wonderful and safe winter!
