Advantages of Duct-Free HVAC Systems
In Minnesota, we love the outdoors. But there is one place we want to keep nature’s elements out – our
homes. When we think of keeping comfortable inside, you may first consider investing in a great furnace and air conditioning system. But what if your space doesn’t have vents and ducts? What if you build an addition to your home or are looking to convert a three-season porch into a four-season porch? You have options. And with a ductless HVAC system from Carrier, you have advantages.
The Right Fit
Ductless systems can go in a wide variety of spaces and are made to suit many needs. A system that uses ducts can take up a lot of valuable real estate in your home by filling up attics, basements, or thick walls with the ducts themselves. Duct-free systems are a space-saving solution, making non-ducted spaces just as comfortable as any other space.
Whether it’s a cold room in your basement, a rustic cabin that could use a little extra comfort, or a workplace that lacks the necessary ductwork – a ductless HVAC system can be just the right fit. “They are great for hydronic (hot water) heated homes since these homes have no ductwork,” says Keith Hill, Minnesota Air’s manager of technical support. “Cabins with space heaters that want something better than a window unit are another (good use).”
Duct-free HVAC systems (DFS), sometimes called mini-split systems, are smaller-sized air conditioners or heat pumps that have a wall hung indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit. “It’s sort of a ‘central unit’ for one with no ductwork required,” says Keith. “Some newer DFS systems can have two or even three indoor units, all in separate rooms and all with no ductwork.”
Compared to window units or room air conditioners, a DFS has much lower noise levels, better humidity control, and doesn’t require blocking a window, says Keith.
The Right Price
Fitting into many different locations is great, but the fact that duct-free HVAC systems are easy to install, is even better. And it keeps the cost of installation down. There are no major renovations involved with going ductless and very little mess. Duct-free HVACs are the quick, elegant option so you can keep your room with a view and leave the patching and painting behind.
Carrier's ductless heat pump or air conditioner integrates neatly into your space. It’s mounted high up on the wall, where it’s least obtrusive and most effective at quietly and gently directing treated air to every corner of the room. In commercial settings, there are options for wall- or ceiling-mounted systems, or even in-ceiling systems.
A ductless system can be installed in just a few hours, which means wherever you are, you can be toasty in no time. Like Carrier says, “sometimes, ductless is more.”
