When the temperature climbs, you’ll find yourself forced to turn on the air conditioner for relief. But what happens when you go to turn it on and it’s not working? There’s no need to sweat the small stuff when it comes to your AC.
If you notice that the big fan on the outside unit isn’t spinning, then you won’t get cool air inside or the hot air pushed outside. This may be caused by an obstruction – like twigs, leaves, debris, or even a critter – falling into the outside unit and stopping the fan from turning. However, it can also be caused by a lack of power going to the outside unit, a damaged coil, or contactor issues. You or your HVAC technician can make sure it’s clean and that power is going to the unit, but leave the bigger repairs to the pro.
Bad wiring can stop power from getting where it needs to be. It can also be very unsafe and a potential fire hazard. If you notice your AC is frequently tripping the circuit breaker or blowing fuses, then it’s time to get a professional opinion on your wiring and electrical hookups.
Not Enough Refrigerant
If refrigerant is an issue, you may have noticed a leak in your AC or just an issue with getting your house cool. Many times, an oil stain is an indicator of a leak. Lubricating oil circulates together with the refrigerant in the system so an oil stain will usually accompany a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant, commonly called Freon® or Puron, is the chemical that actually helps cool the air as it is brought into your air conditioning system. Sometimes the refrigerant needs to be replaced, added to, or recharged. Every time, it should be handled by a licensed professional because it can be hazardous. Many new air conditioners are made to use cleaner and greener alternative refrigerants, so if you are in the market for a whole new AC unit, be sure to check that out.
Lastly, your AC may stop working if you have dirty or damaged evaporator and condenser coils. Those coils are the parts of the AC that work together to help the refrigerant absorb heat and then cool it back down again. In very basic terms, the evaporator coil helps grab the heat from inside and the condenser helps release it into the outside. Get maintenance and HVAC cleanings done regularly to prevent soot and dirt from building up on the coils – you’ll be grateful that you’ll have fewer expensive repairs to make down the line because of it.
